Garbage and Recycling Program

Green Waste Recovery

The City of San Juan Bautista utilities consist of water, sewer, and garbage.  Garbage service is mandatory within the city limits.  To sign up for services you need to visit City Hall at 3112 Second Street and sign up for a new account.  There is a $100 deposit for new accounts. You can also get a new account form at the city's web site at  http://www.san-juan-bautista.ca.us/city/city.htm

Garbage service is handled by Green Waste Recovery from San Jose.  Garbage cans are to be supplied by the resident or you can rent a garbage cart through Green Waste at a fee of $2.50 per month.  Garbage cans are lifted by the garbage man, so may not exceed 60 lbs.  Garbage is picked up Monday mornings.  office worker with trash can

Garbage and yard trimmings must be separated. A yard trimming decal should be placed on one garbage can and only yard trimmings should be placed in that can.

Recycling bins are supplied and picked up free of charge at the resident's request. 

How to Recycle

Mixed recyclables do not have to be sorted by type.  You may place any recyclable items in either of the recycle bins provided by Green Waste.  Please do not set out recyclables or  yard waste in plastic bags.  Acceptable recyclable materials include:

  • Aluminum and tin food and beverage containers

  • Aluminum foil and trays

  • Aerosol cans, scrap metal

  • Glass food and beverage bottles and jars

  • Plastic containers (#1-7) with a neck

  • Milk and juice cartons

  • Automotive oil filters (placed in a sealed plastic bag)

  • Chipboard / paperboard (cereal and other small food boxes - flatten for more room)

  • Newspaper - including inserts and coupons. Place in brown paper bag or bundle

  • Mixed paper - white, colored & computer paper, magazines, catalogs, phone books, envelopes, junk mail, wrapping paper

Cardboard: Must be flattened and no larger than 3'x3'  Place out alongside the recycling bin. full recycling bins

Water Based Paint: Must be in original container with the lid tightly closed and placed out next to the recycling bin. 

Used Motor Oil: Place in the plastic container (provided by Green Waste upon request) and set out next to recycling bins. The lid must be tightly fastened.

Yard Trimmings: Use your own 32-gallon can(s) for yard trimmings.  Can must have a "Yard Trimmings Only" decal provided by the City of San Juan Bautista.  Weight must not exceed 50 lbs.  DO NOT set out in plastic bags.  Leaves, branches, grass clippings, prunings are ok.  NO DIRT, SOD, or ROCKS.

NOT ACCEPTED: hazardous waste, food contaminated paper, carbon blueprint paper, pizza boxes, paper plates, utensils, napkins, facial tissue, oil based paint, diapers, and other materials not listed above.
