How do I dispose of diesel or gasoline?

Gasoline and/or diesel can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. However, this must be delivered in gallon containers only; no drums can be accepted. There is a limit of 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip.  This is related to the amount you are allowed to transport, not the amount that the event can accept.  Thus you can make multiple trips to an event if desired.

How do I dispose of old tires?

The law says that individuals can only haul 9 tires or fewer unless they are registered by the state. A law enforcement office may ask the driver to present their registration permit.  Registered haulers can transport only to authorized facilities.

How do I dispose of TV's, computers, and other electronics?

You can bring these items to the John Smith Road Landfill at no charge during regular business hours.   Click on the John Smith Road Landfill link for specific details. You can also donate these items to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army store.  It's best to call ahead to find out what restrictions and conditions may apply to the items before they are accepted.

Recycling Questions:

Do I have to put my recycling bins out if they are not full?

No. In fact, it is more efficient if you wait until they are full.

When do I need to put my recycling bins out at the curb?

By 5:00 a.m. on your pickup day.

Are there discounts available?

Yes.  Low income residents in the unincorporated areas of the county and cities of Hollister and San Juan Bautista who can demonstrate that they qualify for assistance under PG&E's CARE program are eligible for a discount. Click here for more information about the CARE program.  Call Norcal Waste Systems at (831) 636-4110 for more information.

What should I do if I see someone other than the recycling company taking recyclables from my bin?

Get a description of the person and/or make/model of the vehicle and call the police non-emergency number at 831-636-4330.

The wheel fell off my garbage cart. What do I do?

Call Norcal Waste Systems at (831) 636-7500.  They will replace or repair broken carts.

What do I do with syringes and hypodermic needles? Sharps and Pharmaceutical drop off locations

They cannot be recycled or thrown in the garbage and must be disposed of properly.  These items, in addition to expired medications, can be taken to the locations listed in the link above.  Remember Syringes and lancets must be in an approved Sharps container available free with exchange to residents of San Benito County.  Call (831) 636-4110 or Click here for more information on the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event.
