LAFCO's Mission

The five (5) member San Benito County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) reviews proposals for changes in the boundaries as well as creation or dissolution of cities or special districts within the county.

About San Benito County
San Benito County covers nearly 1,400 square miles of territory in California's central coast region; it is bounded by Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties to the north, Monterey County to the west, and Merced and Fresno counties to the east.  The county has a population of about 56,000.  The county includes two incorporated cities: Hollister, the county seat (pop. 34,000) and San Juan Bautista (pop. 1,600).

 

  Some of LAFCO's Major Functions Include:

Annexations to and detachments from cities or special districts.

Incorporation of cities and formation of special districts.

Merger of special districts.

Spheres of influence studies.

Local government reorganization options.
